UNIVERSITI Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) acclaimed for being at the forefront of engineering and technological knowledge has again made strides with the introduction of a new application-based mobile wallet.

More than 25,000 students and faculty members within UTM’s Kuala Lumpur and Skudai campuses will benefit from the application Boost as a way of moving towards cashless Malaysian society.

Developed by Axiata Digital, the application can be activated on smartphones as a mode of payment for all on-campus purchases.

UTM deputy vice-chancellor (Development) Professor Dr. Azlan Abdul Rahman said: “We are honoured to be partnering with Boost to provide our students with a more enjoyable and seamless digital lifestyle allowing for easy purchases, money transfers, mobile top-ups and digital gifts. “Beyond this, Boost’s unique reward-based experience offers students a greater value in going cashless on campus.

“This is in line with UTM’s vision to be recognised as an influential world-class centre of academic and technological excellence, with an aim to transform all our services to be easily accessed through digital means. This partnership marks the beginning of our initiative as we move towards being a fully digital campus,” Azlan said.

He added that the initiative, led by Faculty of Electrical Engineering Professor Dr. Sevia Mahdaliza Idrus, also received recognition and support from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

“This is a very exciting time for us as we want to be recognised as the pioneers of cashless campus and pave the way towards a new digital lifestyle as we prepare our students for the Industrial Revolution 4.0 mindset,” Azlan said.

Currently, 24 of over 200 merchants within UTM have adopted the cashless payment method.

Azlan believes that this number would grow quickly and hopes that payment for UTM services, as well as scholarships and loans can be done cash free.

The partnership was commemorated in an official signing ceremony between Azlan, Boost chief executive officer Christopher Tiffin and Zen Trillion Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Dick Hilmi Hassan.

Zen Trillion acts as the sole merchant acquisition partner for UTM and Boost.

Speaking on security measures, he emphasised that the team pays extra attention to security details to ensure that the transactions are secure.

“We constantly check the front-end, middleware and back-end to spot any flaws in security. We even held hackathons to see if anyone can break into our system or perhaps spot a loophole,” said Tiffin.

Boost is available on Android and iOS platforms. Launched in January this year, Boost is a platform that digitises on one of the telco’s core services — the way prepaid users top up their mobile credit.

With Boost, users begin their journey by adding money into the application via credit, debit card or any of its 17 online banking partners.

All prepaid user regardless of the network can top up their mobile credit anytime, anywhere, within seconds.

They can pay for purchases at selected merchants at both physical outlets as well as online merchants, without the hassle of cash or card payments.

Boost has been purposefully developed following a human centered approach that takes into account the user experience using the mobile application.
