FIFTY-FIVE final year students from the Certificate in Fashion and Apparel had recently participated in the Eclectic Fashion Show 2017 held at Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Perlis Harumanis Polytechnic.
Organised by Kolej Komuniti Arau Perlis (KKAP), the programme gave students a glimpse of the fashion industry while challenging them to be more creative to produce great designs.
Azhar Zainal, a fashion designer and owner of AZ Brothers Studio Sdn Bhd, was a jury for the event.
“I did not expect these students to be capable of producing designs at a professional level but some of the designs deserve to be given an opportunity to participate in any local fashion show such as the KL Fashion Week,” he said.
KKAP director Norasmah Saad said for the first time this year, the college collaborated with industry players like Azhar. Previously, the assessment of students’ course work was done only by KKAP lecturers.
KKAP’s Fashion and Apparel lecturer Irmayariani Kamalsha, who is also the programme director said the lecturers have always tried to give exposure to their students throughout their course.
“These students were only given a month to complete their designs but they seemed to show their determination to produce at their level best,” she said.
Meanwhile, the unique creation of Nur Natasha Sofian, 19, with the theme ‘The Black Fattich’ emerged as the champion and she took home a RM500 cash prize.
“The shirt was made from cloth sheets that required patience before the design was materialised,” Nur Natasha said, adding that she hopes to open a boutique one day.
The second place went to Nurul Fazliana Bakhori, 19, who created the White Freedom Muslim costume and she received a RM300 cash prize. She said that her winning design would still allow Muslim women to look stylish although they covered their ‘aurat’.
Siti Aisyah Che Amat, 19, who took the third place used the stencil technique in her long dress and took home a cash prize of RM200. According to her, the technique was used to show the variations in her designs. “Although the technique was complicated, the results were satisfying,” she said.
On the whole, students used the knowledge upon the various techniques gathered from their instructors to create magnificent designs.
