SMARTPHONES are part of our lifestyle nowadays. A good camera, fast connectivity and quality screens are important to users as they aid communication in this generation and future generations too.
Joining the bandwagon of new generation smartphones is Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium.
Sleek and slim, this 156 x 77 x 7.9mm Android phone is very comfortable to hold in the palm.
It is also not lacking in strength. Layered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back, the phone has protection against drops at shoulder level.
According to the glass manufacturer, this gives an 80 per cent chance of not damaging it.
The glass also gives a nice glittery and expensive look.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, coupled with gigabit-class connectivity with X16 modem of up to 1Gbps download capability, makes streaming and downloading easy.
The most prominent feature of the phone is its 5.5-inch 4K HDR display, the first in the world for a smartphone.
Using its Bravia TV technology, Sony has included the 4K screen in this smartphone. What you get is vivid colour, nice contrast and superb definition, and the phone delivers the 4K quality as expected.
While many may say that 4K is a marketing ploy as its content in the market is still lacking, this display is future-proof as 4K video recording is becoming the standard for many video recording devices.
Sony has included its camera technology from Alpha and Cyber-Shot ranges into this camera.
It names the 19MP back camera as Motion Eye, which is able to capture moments which the human eye cannot see.
Sony has included memory stacking technology, the first for smartphones, into the Xperia XZ Premium. This enables it to record slow motion at 960fps.
This function works really well, producing superb slow motion videos. This feature is best used when you want to capture a fast-moving subject.
I tried it on a flame and the super slow motion looks impressive.
Another feature made possible with this technology is predictive capture. The camera senses motion and captures up to four predictive photos.
Users have the option of saving all the photos or just choose one. The back camera is equipped with the famous Sony G lens. It is 25mm wide and with a wide aperture of F2.0. The combination of quality lens and new Exmor RS mobile sensor results in sharper and clearer image.
The front camera with 22mm-wide F2.0 lens makes it easy to include big groups of people into your photo.
I took some shots with the phone and discovered that the picture quality in low light is excellent.
You can see from the shot I took at a night market.
The picture is sharp with a slight motion blur, which is a problem when you take photos under low light condition with a smartphone.
I also took some shots during sunset at Putrajaya and used its built-in photo editor to edit and the result is fantastic. The photo captures the dynamic range of the scene.
The detail of the sky is retained, unlike other camera phones. The shadow is not too dark making the stones in the foreground visible.
The shot of Masjid Tuanku Zainal Abidin in Putrajaya is sharp with good details.
The Sony Xperia XZ Premium comes with a high-resolution audio feature, which is a sound enhancing technology.
Sony has always been known for its beautiful audio gadgets and sound technology innovations. High-resolution audio enhances the bit-rates which result in detail, punchy and clearer sound.
The front stereo speakers are placed at the front of the phones and not on the side. This gives better projection of sound.
The sound system also has a DSEE HX technology, which enhances MP3 files to sound like studio quality. Listening to my favourite numbers with the Xperia XZ Premium is a pleasure.
The phone packs 3,230 mAh battery power which lasts me all day. It has Smart Stamina, which predicts battery life.
The SonyXperia XZ Premium really suits its name in terms of technology innovations.
It is the phone for you if you enjoy watching videos, playing games and listening to music.
