KUALA LUMPUR: For the past decade, veteran singer Datuk DJ Dave has been known as an ardent supporter of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He even set up a foundation for the well-being of artistes called Yayasan Artis 1Malaysia (YA1M) in honour of the 1Malaysia campaign which the former leader unveiled in 2009.
However, shortly after the conclusion of the recent general election which saw Pakatan Harapan (PH) led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad emerge victorious, a viral photo of Dave, 70, allegedly trying to shake hands with the in-coming Prime Minister, emerged in social media.
“I don’t want to comment on this for now, and I’ll release an official statement about the photo soon,” said Dave in an interview yesterday.
Some Netizens called Dave a “lalang” who quickly switched political allegiances, despite the fact that he had been supportive of all incumbent prime ministers and their policies throughout his singing career.
In the recently concluded election, Dave’s well-known song Kawan Setia from 4 decades ago was used in Barisan Nasional (BN) campaigns around the country.
On another note, Dave said YA1M would continue to work with the Government in giving support to needy artistes, especially veterans, and promote national unity through the arts.
He attended a YA1M event at Hotel Seri Pacific, Jalan Chow Kit yesterday with 15 veteran artistes, and gave them RM2,000 each for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The artistes included Mubarak Ali, Ismail Jantan, Raja Mohamad Rashid Raja Salehudin, Khairul Azhar Abdul Samad, Noraziyan Ibrahim and Hashimah Hashim.
Last week, actress Rozita Che Wan said many celebrities who now showed support for the Prime Minister previously kept their support to themselves “for fear of being disturbed by certain powers-that-be”.
