SETIU: A 12-year-old boy was killed, while nine other Year Six pupils were injured – two of them severely – when the Toyota Innova they travelling in skidded to the side of the road and overturned into a ditch near Kampung Sungai Bari here yesterday.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Elias Abu Bakar said the remains of Aqil Iskandar Mohd Azro Affandi were sent to the forensic unit of the Setiu Hospital for a post-mortem, while the nine injured were sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital for treatment.
It is learnt that Aqil died of severe head injuries.
Elias said the van was heading towards Kota Baru from Kuala Terengganu when the incident occurred at Km47 of Jalan K/Trg-K/Bharu, near Kampung Sungai Bari, at 2pm.
"Initial investigation revealed that the van skidded and spun several times before overturning at the roadside,” he said today.
All 10 Year Six pupils in the van are from Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu 29, Sg Tong, Setiu, Terengganu.
"They were returning to the school's dormitory after attending a 'kenduri' at their supervisor's house in Kampung Selamat, Sungai Tong," Elias said, adding that the driver of the van escaped unhurt.
Elias said the injured students are: Cik Ahmad Zakwan Abd Rashid; Muhammad Fakrul Razi b Fauzi; Muhammad Iman Hakim Zul; Muhammad Irwan Fahami Mohamad Rosli; Amirulhakim Kamaruzaman; Muhamad Arif Aziz; Muhammad Aqif Daniel Ramli; Muhammad Nur Hariz Mohd Ismail; and Mohamad Faiq Hurairah b Mahadi.
Elias said Ahmad Zakwan and Aqif Daniel suffered severe injuries.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road and Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving and causing hurt," he added.
