KUCHING: The world’s leading players have praised the Sarawak badminton fans for their strong presence at the Malaysia Open being held at Perpaduan Stadium, Petra Jaya from April 4-9.
Local favourite Datuk Lee Chong Wei was happy to see 85 per cent of the stadium filled with fans and described it as a positive sign for badminton in Sarawak.
“The huge crowd augurs well for Sarawak badminton. I hope that more international badminton tournaments can be held in Sarawak,” he added.
The world number one player suggested that the state government build a larger indoor stadium so that it can organise more international tournaments.
Meanwhile, Lin Dan of China said he was surprised to find that the Sarawak fans were a sporting lot.
“For the first time, I received logts of cheers and applause from spectators outside China,” he added. --Bernama
