KANGAR: A drug addict who slashed his own father to death at their home in Padang Melangit, Berseri last Friday, was slapped with a murder charge at the Magistrate's Court here today.
Amirul Amin Amran, 24, arrived at the court barefoot and clad in a white T-shirt. He was taken to the court about 9am under heavy police escort.
He was charged with murdering his father Amran Ariffin, 53, committing the murder between 7.20am and 7.30am on April 14, at the family's home in Batu 4 1/2 , Lorong Maqdis, Jalan Padang Melangit, near Berseri.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
The accused nodded when the charge was read to him before Magistrate Mohd Azhar Hamzah but no plea was recorded.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari urged the court to set the mention date after the medical report is completed.
Mohd Azhar subsequently fixed July 17 for mention.
The accused later claimed trial to a separate charge of attempted suicide using a knife, at the same place and at the same time.
For the offence, he was charged under Section 309 of the same Act which carries up to one year imprisonment or fine or both.
Amirul was represented by lawyer Syed Muhammad Anwar Syed Lokman Hakim.
It was reported that Amirul had attacked his own father after the man refused to give him money for drugs.
His father, who sustained multiple slash wounds on his abdomen, back and arms, died on the spot.
The accused then escaped to his grandmother's home nearby and tried to commit suicide but was subsequently captured by police.
