KOTA BARU: Police today detained three members of a notorious local gang, including its leader “Harry Gunong”, at a restaurant in Kubang Tin in Melor, shooting out the tyres of a getaway vehicle in the process.

State police chief Datuk Hasanuddin Hassan said a police team had first arrested two of the gang members at a restaurant about 12.10am.

He said another gang member, who was in a Perodua Axia outside the restaurant, then pulled out a gun and fired three shots at the police team, but missed.

“The man then tried to flee in the vehicle, but my men fired five shots at the tyres and forced the vehicle to a stop,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters.

Hasanuddin said one of the policemen suffered light injuries in a scuffle with the gang member who had tried to flee when attempting to arrest him.

He said police seized a revolver with three bullets, three shell casings, a small knife and tools which the gang used to break into houses and vehicles. They also seized the Axia and another vehicle used by the three men.

Hasanuddin said both vehicles had been reported stolen in Jerteh, Terengganu recently.

“The men, aged 20 to 30, had records with a total of 35 previous convictions and had been on the wanted list for various crimes,” he said, adding that police obtained remand orders to detain the men for seven days beginning today.

Hasanuddin said the gang was wanted for armed robberies, extortion, vehicle theft, burglaries and other crimes in Kelantan and Terengganu.
