KUALA TERENGGANU: The State Maritime Department arrested four Vietnamese fishermen including a 'tekong' in a cargo boat 40 nautical miles off here yesterday.

During Ops Perkasa Timur, a patrol boat from the department's enforcement unit intercepted the cargo boat registered as D'LIMA at 8pm.

Terengganu Maritime Department director Captain Maritime Rahim Ramli said the four, aged between 17 and 49, failed to produce valid documents for their cargo and permit to fish in Malaysian waters.

"Our men spotted the cargo boat while patrolling in the vicinity at 8pm.

"We believe the cargo boat was waiting to purchase fish from local fishermen in the vicinity," he said yesterday.

He said the cargo was taken to the State Maritime jetty in Pulau Kambing here and the case was being investigated under the Merchants Ship Ordinance 1952 (MSO).

He said those with information about suspicious activity involving foreign fishing boats should call MERS 999 or 09-6224357.
