SANDAKAN: Twelve people were arrested from a house believed to be a transit point for illegal immigrants arriving from the Philippines here.

Acting on a tip off a team from the Marine police raided the house at a squatter colony at Batu 2 last night and found a woman and 11 men.

Investigations revealed the group had just arrived here from Zamboanga, Philippines with several others who managed to escape the dragnet.

“Several people who were sitting at the veranda of the house managed to escape when the raiding party arrived,” according to a statement from the State Marine police.

“The team found 11 men and a man sleeping in the living room. We also believe all of the foreigners were offered jobs at an oil plantation and that their travel expenses were borne by a local,” it said.

Investigations are continuing.
