KUCHING: Sarawak police have stepped up operations against illegal lottery (4D) and cyber gambling operators to root out such crimes.

A series of 36 raids were conducted last week as the state police intensified its crackdown against illegal gambling dens in the state.

The raids were conducted in Kota Samarahan, Bau, Padawan, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Sarikei, Sibu, Kanowit, Matu Daro, Bintulu, Miri and here.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said 50 suspected gamblers were arrested during the raids.

“Of those, 36 were rounded up when the police raided illegal 4D counters.

“The team also seized RM8,049, mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery during the raids,” he said.

Dev said four raids were conducted at counters offering cyber gambling reload services here, in Padawan, Bintulu and Matu Daro.

The raids, he said, resulted in the arrest of 14 people and seizure of 14 mobile phones and tablets used for cyber gambling reload services.

“Cash amounting to RM2,841 was also seized from the four raids,” he said.

The suspects, aged between 15 and 49, including five foreigners, were being investigated under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
