TAWAU: Police foiled an armed robbery attempt and detained a man brandishing a sword at a 24-hour convenience store in Taman Sejati here last night.

In the incident at about midnight, policemen on beat duty had noticed something amiss and immediately checked the store.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Fadil Marsus said they found a man who was pointing a sword at the cashier and demanded for money.

He said the policemen had to use force as the suspected robber was behaving aggressively and refused to cooperate.

“Our men wrestled the armed man to the ground and arrested him. Police also seized the sword, a screwdriver, and a bag from the culprit.

Fadil said the 37-year-old man, who wore a black t-shirt and a red cap, had gone to the store with the sword and took the cashier by surprise.

"Luckily, our men were conducting a crime prevention patrol in the area and saw the incident.

The man is believed to be drug addict and had no identification document when he was arrested.

Fadil said the man had criminal record involving drug offences and that he was deported to the Philippines in 2006.

The man was tested positive for methamphetamine and police would investigate him for other criminal offences.
