KOTA BELUD: A policeman narrowly avoided being stabbed in the face with a hunting knife in an altercation with an armed man at a bus stop near Kampung Sembirai, here on Sunday night.

The policeman and his partner were conducting Op Tapis, an anti-drug operation, when they came upon two men at a bus stop around 8pm.

The policemen asked for the men to hand over their identity cards for checking.

One of the men, aged 23, handed over his MyKad but the other man said he did not have it with him. They were then instructed to follow the policemen to the police station.

Kota Belud police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said one of the men said he had to relieve himself while the other man said he needed to go to his cousin’s house.

When police rejected their requests, the men turned aggressive and put up a struggle.

One of the suspects, as he was being handcuffed, produced an eight-inch knife from a sheath at his hip, and tried to stab one of the policemen in the face, before fleeing.

Both men escaped.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
