KUALA LUMPUR: To maximise its objective of increasing the use of Internet in order to build a knowledge-based community, the government is looking at measures to upgrade all 1Malaysia Internet Centres (PI1M) nationwide.

In saying this, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said focus would be given on dilapidated and non-functioning centres.

"I have received complaints that there are centres that have been closed and in the last two months I have requested that these issues be reviewed again so that this program can benefit the community," he said during the question and answer session in Dewan Rakyat today.

Gobind also said as of now, there were 860 PI1M nationwide.

He was responding to a supplementary question from Su Keong Siong (DAP-Kampar) on the internet centres that were not maintained, with some having been shut down.
