PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet assured no displaced Rohingnya people will be sent to Bau and Serian in Sarawak.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem said the assurance was given by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Richard said this in a statement after he brought up the matter in the weekly cabinet meeting today.
"The issues of Rohingnya people being sent to Sarawak is false and I call on all parties not to believe such news.
"Those who have received such news via social media platforms should lodge reports with the authorities, so that proper investigations can be taken," he added.
Sarawak Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin had said he would oppose any attempts to bring displaced Rohingya people to Sarawak, especially in the Serian and Bau districts.
Manyin was asked to respond on a social media posting that a certain number of Rohingya people would be sent to Serian.
In the past few weeks, thousands of Rohingya from the northern Rakhine state in Myanmar, have fled their homes following a crackdown by Burmese authorities.
