GEORGE TOWN: Several cars were left damaged, with a Perodua Kancil smashed, when pieces of roofing showered down upon Lebuh Penang this afternoon.
It is understood that the debris came from the roof of a shop house. The incident occurred around 1pm.
A stall owner, Rasik Sameem Syed Ibrahim, 33, said he heard a loud thud as was stunned to see debris raining down on several parked cars in the area.
He said many people scrambled out of the building, fearing for their safety.
“It happened so quickly. I’m just glad that no one was hurt,” he said.
The worst hit was a Perodua Kancil, which had its windscreen smashed and its roof caved in.
A tourist from the Netherlands, Joose Behouden, 72, said she was walking in the area with her husband when the incident occurred.
"Thankfully, all of us nearby were not injured,” she said.
Meanwhile, Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue station senior officer Saiful Bahari Abdul Kadir said they were alerted to the incident at 1.37pm.
He said the authorities are still investigating the cause of the incident.
“Clearing works are ongoing. The building is still safe as there were only minor damages to the roof,” he said.
