SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Harapan must give its word that it will pursue the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the Memali incident if the pact wins the 14th General Election.
Selangor Pas commissioner Sallehen Mukhyi said, regardless of who forms the government, be it Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan, they should investigate the Memali tragedy, which saw 18 people killed and more than 100 injured on Nov 19, 1985.
“The victims and families of those who perished in the tragedy must be given justice.
“Hence, whichever party that wins GE14 and comes into power must make (the probe into) Memali a priority,” he told the New Straits Times today.
This, Sallehen said, was a crucial move since if the opposition pact wins GE14, there is a high possibility that they will forgo investigating the incident, especially with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its prime minister.
“Pakatan Harapan must come up with a statement assuring the public that it would establish an RCI to uncover the truth behind the Memali tragedy and bring closure to the victims if it forms the government.”
Sallehen also called on Parti Amanah Negara (Pan) president Mohamad Sabu (Mat Sabu) to make his stand on this matter.
“Mat Sabu was among the ones championing calls for justice on Memali when he was with Pas. So he has to answer on this now and not turn a blind eye,” he added.
Meanwhile, Amanah information chief Khalid Samad said the opposition pact will look into all cases if it wins GE14.
“We will consider all necessary actions on all cases of misuse of power and corruption, including but not limited to the Memali incident.
“However, it is of utmost importance to concentrate on the now rather than prioritising the past,” he added.
Political analyst Prof Dr Rusdi Omar yesterday said Pakatan Harapan should pursue the setting up of an RCI on Memali incident if it wins the GE14.
This, he said, would show the sincerity of the pact and that of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the need for the truth to be revealed on what transpired in the tragedy.
Kedah Pas deputy commissioner Muhamad Sanusi Md Nor had earlier on expressed his doubts the RCI would be called for if Dr Mahathir becomes the country’s seventh prime minister should Pakatan Harapan win GE14.
