KUALA LUMPUR: Some of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) leaders are against the move by party candidates to contest under the DAP logo in the 14th General Election in the event the opposition party is dissolved.

A PPBM source said it was better if the party’s candidates contest under the PKR or Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) logo due to Malay voters and Bumiputera community’s sentiment in being associated with the Chinese dominated opposition party.

“Many (at the grass roots level) will not agree and will be against PPBM candidates being forced to contest under a DAP ticket. This was despite the matter not being discussed at state or national level.

“PPBM is a Malay based party and it will be tough if we had to use the DAP logo to contest in a a general election. This is not to dismiss DAP’s strength but PPBM’s sentiment is more towards the Malays and Bunipeteras,” he said.

PPBM faces the risk of being deregistered under Section 14(5) of the Societies Act 1966, for failing to handover information and documents involving minutes of meetings at all levels, as well as its financial statements to the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

Last Friday, RoS director-general, Surayati Ibrahim, had stressed that PPBM had around 20 days to hand over information and documents to the RoS

On Plan B which will be resorted to by PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad if the opposition pact member is deregistered, the source said the alternative plan was for PPBM candidates to contest under the PKR banner.

“Before this there was suggestions from party leaders that in the event PPBM is deregistered, it was unlikely that the DAP logo will be used.

“If the problem (from being deregistered) is not resolved, with GE14 fast approaching, PPBM will use either the PKR or PAN logo. If the DAP logo is used, we will be facing problems,” the source added.

Meanwhile, PPBM Information Chief, Datuk Kamaruddin Md Noor, is confident that the party’s candidates would be able to contest under its own logo even if the problem with RoS is not resolved.

“We do not deny the possibility of contesting under a friends (PH) ticket, however the possibility is low as we are quite confident of contesting under the PPBM ticket.

Whatever the outcome, the PPBM leadership had clarified at the grassroots level from time to time and they understand issues at hand.
