TO evaluate the “chi” of a home or even an office, Feng Shui practitioners have widely used numerology, or the symbolism of numbers.

Ken Lauher, a United States-based Feng Shui consultant, said numbers 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9 were the best for a house or the workplace.

He said, number 1 symbolises a new start or even birth, number 2 depicts balance, as in Yin and Yang (contrary forces that may complement each other) while number 3 holds mystical powers.

For numbers 6 and 9, which are multiples of 3, Lauher said they also carried good fortune.

The pronunciation of number 9 resembles that of the word “longevity” in the Chinese language and for many homeowners, having this number means they can expect to stay for quite some time.

For the number 8, it is no secret that it is the most sought-after by house buyers, especially the Chinese, as it sounds like “prosperity”.

In Feng Shui, the “ba gua” has eight trigrams, a pattern determining the significance and auspicious qualities of spatial relationships.

In Malaysia, car owners wouldn’t mind paying hefty fees for “8” or “8888” number plates.

Meanwhile, the number 4 has always been considered as unlucky due to the fact that it sounds like “death” in the Chinese language.

That is perhaps why you find some houses or even high rise buildings without the “4th floor”, which is often referred to as 3A instead.

For the number 7, it is considered as unlucky in Feng Shui because a Chinese memorial service for someone who had passed away is usually done every seven days within seven weeks.

But surely, footballers Cristiano Ronaldo or David Beckham who have made “No. 7” popular, would have a different take on this.

For the number 5, Lauher said this was a neutral number.

He explained that to determine whether your house has an auspicious number or not, merely look at each number individually and add up all multiple numbers together to get a number between 1 and 9.

Meanwhile, Feng Shui expert Rodika Tchi of said Feng Shui-wise, the energy of numbers tend to get slightly misinterpreted because the traditional interpretation of numbers is based on the way the numbers sound in the Chinese language.

“Of course, as with everything, these are just the basics of house numbers in Feng shui. An experienced Feng Shui consultant can read specific energy patterns from the combination of your house numbers, but it is not about it being good or bad Feng Shui,” she said.
