KUALA LUMPUR: National coach Datuk Misbun Sidek feels that Lee Chong Wei is still a good player but the age factor has affected his mind.
That was Misbun’s response after Chong Wei suffered a surprise first round loss to Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the French Open on Wednesday.
“Chong Wei is still a top player, But he keeps thinking about the age factor,” said Misbun yesterday.
Misbun Chong Wei can still play at the highest level but the coach’s main concern is that he might try to change his game before entering the court.
“He thought he is old and tried to slow down his game.
“He shouldn’t change his game when he is still playing at a high level. If he wants to, he should just alter his game a bit.
“My advice to Chong Wei is to analyse his game again, of what happened to him. His opponents, from Chen Long onwards, are always studying his style.”
This year, Chong Wei has lost in the early rounds of the Indonesia, Open, World Championships, Denmark Open and French Open.
Misbun said the former World No 1 needs to clear his mind of doubts about his age.
“He has been the Super Series king and I hope he will train harder to play against the new generation of players.
“I have been in contact with Chong Wei. I told him to take his defeat calmly. Many top stars in sports also lose at times.”
