KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See are making waves at the Macau Open as they kept the Malaysian flag flying by advancing to the semi-finals of the tournament where they will face China’s Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong tomorrow.
Earlier, Peng Soon-Yee See showed welcome consistency when they booked their place in the semi-finals by defeating Terry Hee Yong Kai-Tan Wei Nan of Singapore, 21-18, 21-10 today.
The victory sets them up for a mouth-watering clash against the much fancied China pair of SiWei-Yaqiong, who defeated the second seeds, Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong, 21-18, 21-18.
“We have achieved our target here by making the semi-finals. Our next game will be nothing short of difficult and we will have to be totally focused if we are to upset the China pair.
“After three games in this tournament, our confidence is soaring and it will be our source of motivation for our semi-final showdown tomorrow. We have never gone up against the China pair so it will be an interesting yet tough game against them for sure,” said Peng Soon when contacted in Macau today.
Since they were paired up earlier this year, Peng Soon-Yee See have performed well and showed positive improvement when they won the Russia Open Grand Prix tournament, apart from making the semi-finals of the South Korean Open Super Series tournament in September.
Meanwhile, luck was not on the side of professional men’s singles player Chong Wei Feng and women’s doubles pair Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean, who exited the tournament at the quarter-finals stage.
Wei Feng went down fighting to South Korean Lee Hyun II, 23-21, 10-21, 11-21, while Mei Kuan-Meng Yean suffered defeat at the hands of Indonesia’s Della Destiara Haris-Tiara Rosaliah Nuraidah, 14-21, 14-21.
